The Power of Self-Awareness in Leadership
If I could give one piece of advice to every leader I’ve ever coached, it would be this –
Start with yourself.
Because no strategy, tool, or leadership framework can substitute for genuine self-awareness.
It’s the superpower behind confident decision-making, meaningful relationships, and lasting influence.
Why Self-Awareness Is So Rare and So Powerful
Research says most of us overestimate how well we actually understand our emotions, behaviours, and impact on others.
And that’s not because we’re ignorant, it’s because we’re human. We move fast. We lead busy teams. We react under pressure. In that rush, reflection takes a back seat.
The Ripple Effect of Self-Awareness
When a leader is self-aware, people around them feel safer, seen, and supported. They know where they stand. They know their leader actively listens.
In contrast, when a leader lacks self-awareness, even good intentions can land wrong. A sharp word in a stressful moment. A feedback conversation feels like criticism.
Self-awareness doesn’t make you perfect. It simply makes you responsible for your presence, your impact, and your growth.
How to Build Self-Awareness Every Day
You don’t need a long retreat or a leadership course to start. Here are a few simple, powerful practices that can help you become more self-aware:
Before diving into work, take a minute to ask yourself, “How do I want to show up today?” A calm, intentional start helps you lead with clarity instead of chaos.
At the end of your day, jot down –
True self-awareness grows when you invite perspectives from others. Ask your team or peers what they see, especially the things you might miss.
Notice what triggers you like what kind of comments or situations make you defensive or impatient. Those are clues to deeper patterns worth understanding.
Before responding in meetings or emails, pause. One mindful breath can help you choose a response that aligns with who you want to be, not just how you feel in the moment.
Leadership Starts from Within
Great leadership is about being the most cantered. And that starts with knowing yourself and your triggers, your values, your strengths, and your blind spots.
